I saw a few of you posting what was in your makeup bag so I thought I'd do a post on my favorites/ essentials. I used to work at the Lancome counter in our local Macy's and have been doing makeup ever since. I love doing it and wish I could live in a big city and do makeup all day long. Over time I've tried so many brands and products and I can definitely say some things are worth buying name brand for, and some things simply aren't.
First, moisturizer. You can buy any $45 brand you want, but this $6 Aveeno (can be found at any drug store or Walmart) one is my favorite.
Brushes. I have several cheap Face Secret brushes (purchased at Sally's Beauty Supply) that I love. My powder and blush brushes come from there, but I haven't found a cheap version of a foundation brush that's as good as this one from Lancome. I've had it since I worked there, over 4 years ago. I recommend applying foundation with a brush because a sponge hoards germs like a public toilet.
I've tried tons of foundations and my favorite is Clinique Superbalanced Foundation. I love the coverage and the shade I wear (Alabaster) matches my Casper-esque face oh so well.
I always go for a translucent powder because in the summer I get a little darker and I don't want to look as Casper-like. My favorite powder is Sephora's Sculpting disk. I use it for shading and when I do get darker, I mainly use the bronzer as a powder. It's about $27 but lasts for months. You can't tell from this picture but it's about 3 times the size of a regular powder compact.
After I apply my foundation and powder, I fill in my brows with Maybelline Expert Brow Pencil in Black Velvet (I don't make these names up, people) I think everyone should shade in their brows, whether they are black like mine or light blonde. It just gives the face a more framed look. I always buy the cheap versions of eye brow pencils and eyeliners because it's the same thing as name brand, only a few bucks instead.
My favorite eye liner:
Another Maybelline product. I rotate between black and brown and always wear liquid. I find a pencil liner doesn't last the whole day on my lids. This tiny tube lasts me months, as opposed to 1-2 months I've gotten out of expensive versions.
Of course, like everyone and their mama, I love the Naked 2 palette. I just got it for Christmas but it's great because it has every color I need for a day to day basis. Before this, I only used MAC shadows because they last through the day and have great pigment. They run $15 a piece though and with the Naked palette you get 12 colors for $50. I still love my MAC shadows but will use my Naked Palette till it runs out.
And my favorite mascara:
This is another product you can skimp on. You don't need a $35 mascara to get the job done. I always buy Maybelline and this seems to work best on me. I've tried the maroon tube with the white mascara on one side (you know, the one everyone loves) and I HATE it. It comes off in spider leg looking clumbs in the shower and I don't find it makes my lashes look long. To each his own though.
All this being said, I will stress again that you don't need to buy the most expensive makeup brands to look fabulous. The only thing I'd bite the bullet and spend a little more on is foundation and a foundation brush. Everything else is just icing on the cake.
A few of you have asked me to do a makeup tutorial so I'll be doing one this weekend hopefully and posting next week. Would you rather see my every day makeup look or a more dramatic look?
Love it... I am also a Maybelline Falsies mascara fan and I need that Naked Pallete - everyone has it. LOL
ReplyDeleteI would love some tutorials on every day make-up tips. I feel like I have been doing the same thing for years now and would love some tips and tricks to switch it up a bit.
ReplyDeleteI really should get a brow pencil because I have blond eyebrows, but I'm so lazy about it. Sigh. I'm also thinking that the Naked 2 pallet should be a V-day present to myself.
ReplyDeleteI literally was on the edge of my seat for this post. Treu Story. Make me beautiful on 9th Kassie!
ReplyDeleteI need the naked pallette stat! and yay for tutorials! I think you should do both! :)
ReplyDeleteI need help in the makeup department bad! I have no clue what I am doing... What colors I should be wearing, etc... What do you suggest? Go to my local Sepora (sp), and give them my life savings and tell them to work their magic?
ReplyDeleteI'd love tutorials!!! I use mot of what you use too.. Thanks for sharing..
ReplyDeleteLove all my Mary Kay products! Do you use a foundation primer?
ReplyDeleteoooh, where do I get that Naked Pallete? So pretty! I'm a new bare minerals convert, and loving it so far. I still use my superbalanced when I need moisture though!
ReplyDeleteLove aveeno!
ReplyDeleteYou totally need to do a tutorial! I say one on every day and one on "going out." I have the Lancome foundation brush and love it! I have had it for about 6 years. I wash it every nighta along with my other brushes using baby shampoo and they look and work like they are brand new :)
ReplyDeleteI use that same Clinique foundation but in Ivory. I've used it for YEARS! I've tried a few other Clinique foundations that have came out over the years and a few other brands too, but I always go back to the superbalanced. Love it!
ReplyDeleteI just want you to do my makeup....just for funsies!!
ReplyDeleteI used to use that Clinique foundation too! I've yet to purchase the Naked palette, but I think I'm gunna have to just give in and DO IT. No other palettes have done as well as everyone says Naked does!
ReplyDeleteLove Aveeno and Clinique foundation! I need to get a Naked 2 palette...I think I am the only one without one! Ha!
ReplyDeleteI'm make up challenged I feel so I think tutorials ate a great idea! Thanks for all the great tips and suggestions!
ReplyDeleteOh I LOVE your makeup bag!!!! I am currently using the stuff I have, but want to find a good mascara. I haven't EVER been able to find one & I'm 32 & have been wearing makeup since I was 16. EVERY mascara I've tried, mid-day, I have a mascara semi-circle under my eyes. May give this one a try when I buy some more.
ReplyDeletePlease, please do a makeup tutorial! I need help with eyeshow/eyeliner! And the maybelline colassol is my absolute fav mascara! I've been using it for years. Im not sure you could get me to even sample another kind unless it was free!
ReplyDeleteI would love to see a make-up tutorial! I never know how to make eye make stay on or what colors to pair with what outfits.
ReplyDeleteEveryday makeup, with a few ways to turn it into a nighttime look.
ReplyDeleteWhat's your IG handle? I want to see this make up bag!
ReplyDeleteI am with you...I bought that red tube of mascara and hate it! just don't get what everybody is loving on it for!
ReplyDeleteOhhhh I NEED some of that bronzing/highlighter powder!! Thanks for sharing pretty girl!
ReplyDeleteI used to work at the Lancome counter too! I LOVE their foundation brush but didn't feel comfortable making people buy $28 mascara unless there was a free gift. It's definitely taught me a lot of lessons and I usually opt for L'Oreal since they are owned by the same people and basically use the same stuff Lancome does. The compact from Sephora looks awesome! That will be next on my Sephora list :)
ReplyDeleteI'm just a makeup snob. lol. I love my Mac and some colors I will always stock, but I am becoming an UD convert... Love the sephora blush/brozer compact. I have a Mac compact almost identical from when they did a SuperWoman promo and I LOVE it!!! I just use it to kinda give my CASPER skin a slight glow... lol
ReplyDeleteFun link up!! :)
Great pics! I love the naked pallet and I'm pretty sure I have that Mac shadow!

OMG first of all: I think there are a lot of girls out there that don't need that much make up themselves. So secondly I like all of your stuff! You stuck to the products that will harmonize with your natural look. Also I like how you have high end products mixed with a bit cheaper ones!
ReplyDeleteI stumbled upon your blog and this post – like any good Internet spiral does to many a blogger – and I cheered out loud when you mentioned using drugstore mascara to fit the bill. I love Maybelline when I've used it, and I've recently gotten addicted to CG's NatureLuxe. It's amazeballs! :) I agree with not skimping on foundation or face products, but I think some drugstore foundations are BETTER than department store makeup brands. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for your interesting post! I'm going to look into that Sephora powder. I have oily skin so I'm curious to know if it's good for walking refineries like me. Haha.
